November 14th News

Fellow Squash Members,

I would like thank everyone who attended the wine tasting kick off party last Thursday night. We had over 60 people in attendance. Everyone seemed to enjoy the great food and wine. A special thanks should be extended to Anthony Cannuscio, Antonio’s Restaurant and Michael Bray, Point Pub Liquors. The event couldn’t have happened without their hard work and service. Club members should keep their businesses in mind during the Holiday Season.

Our Holiday Social will be in combination with the Greate Bay Country Club Tree Trimming Party. Members and guests are welcome. The event will be held at the Country Club on December 2nd @ 6pm until..? The cost is $14.95 plus tax and gratuity. Wrapped gifts for needy children are welcome but certainly not required. Feel free to contact Greate Bay with any questions, 609-927-5071.

The draws for the Holiday Tournament will be posted Wednesday morning at the club. The tournament committee has a good problem. There are 22 singles players an 11 doubles teams that need to play their matches on time for a December 8th finals night. The committee needs everyone’s cooperation. If a match is not completed on time then a decision will be made by the committee to keep the tournament on pace. Members should note that most tournaments are completed in two or three days with multiple matches in one day. Five to seven days to play a match is very reasonable for a competition event. (There will be a casual Holiday Social the night of the finals).

I hope everyone enjoys the Thanksgiving Holiday. Make sure you schedule a few matches to burn off the calories.

Club News

The league committee will be meeting shortly to discuss ways of improving activities and participation.  Leagues will start in late October. The committee members include, Paul Chan- Chairman, Brian Meyers, Bob McCallister, Doug Taylor, Bruce Freilich, and Greg Smallwood.

The new tournament chairman will be Greg Dedomenicis.  He will be joined by Marc Bouclier and Carl Smallwood.  Judd McLaughlin and Joe Somers will be heading the membership committee.  Members are still encouraged to join a committee. If you are interested in participating please contact me.

In August the club held an open meeting to discuss the upcoming season and share ideas regarding all aspects of the club.  The majority of the discussions were geared toward the future and how we can get stronger. When all was said and done, member participation is the key to our success. We are a non profit member run club.  Member involvement is strongly encouraged in the areas of membership, social and committee participation.

Other topics included:

  • Changing the league format to be discussed by committee.
  • How can we use our website and internet for communication and new members.
  • Starting a new bumping board.
  • Moving the pool table to open more leisure space by the flat screen TV.
  • Reporting league tournament results to the Atlantic City Press.

The tennis professional Lee Mendell will be holding junior squash clinics for his students to introduce them to squash. The idea is to increase the awareness for local juniors and increased exposure for our club.
