Dear Greate Bay Racquet Club members,

I just wanted to let everybody know who was involved with the successful Club Championships, and thanking them for their help, starting with Carl Smallwood, for passing the torch and showing me all the intricacies of running these types of tournaments, along with his input with the handicaps. I would also like to thank Bill Sykes for making all those phone calls to get these matches played in a somewhat timely fashion. It's not an easy task!! Also for his input with the handicaps.

The handicap finals ended up being very close. Thank you also to our President Tom Cetrone for overseeing the tournaments, all the emails, the food menu, and the great job of keeping score of most of the finals matches. Thanks to Mohamed Hassan, and Hale Tendler for keeping score also. Most importantly I want to thank all the players for participating!! Awesome squash!! Congratulations to all the champions! I had a GREATE time and see you next season!

Best regards, Greg DeDomenicis

Squash News

The club enjoyed some great tournament squash this past weekend.  It started Friday night. The club hosted the Singles Handicapped and Men’s A Doubles Championships.  In both matches the winner needed to make a comeback, down 2 games to 0.  There was a standing room only crowd who enjoyed special player introductions by Gary “Michael Buffer” Massey.

  • Singles -  Don Baird defeated Joe Somers.
  • Doubles – Jim Mott & Greg Smallwood defeated Mike Bray & Mark Benevento.

A special thanks goes out to Greate Bay Country Club for providing the food and Mike Bray, Point Liquor for donating the wine.  Bill Sykes did a great job organizing the club for the event.

On Saturday the club hosted the 17th annual McCullough Tournament.  In the singles event Don Baird defeated Greg Sykora to capture his second championship in two days.  Doubles – Bob Watkins & Jim Dunn defeated Leo Yeager & Andy Kiker.

Thanks to Jim Mott who organized the entire event and Senator McCullough for awarding the winners with trophies.

Future events will be posted shortly.

You missed a good game!

For those of you that haven’t been on the court lately and forget what a great workout squash is, you should have witnessed the Men’s C finals. Joe Somers defeated Greg Dedomenicis in three games, however, the match took close to an hour and the scores were 15-14, 15-13 & 15-14. Joe & Greg played great and as expected were exhausted. Congratulations to both players.

Lane, Rosen Named All-America

Junior Gilly Lane and sophomore Lee Rosen of the Penn men's squash team have been named All-America by the College Squash Association. Lane has been named to the First Team while Rosen is a Second Team member. Lane is now a three-time All-American after being named a second-teamer as a freshman and sophomore. With the honor, he joins an elite group of Quakers who have been named All-America three times - only Stewart Ballard C'89 and Steve Scharff C'95 have also achieved the feat.

Lane is also a three-time All-Ivy selection. Rosen, who had a breakout season as Penn's No. 2 player, earns his first All-America honor. He cemented his spot in the top 20 with his upset of 13th-seeded Eduardo Pereira of Trinity in the first round of the CSA Individual Championships. Squash All-Americans are determined by the final individual rankings of the season. The top 10 players are named First Team All-America and the next 10 are second-teamers. Lane was ranked eighth in the nation, while Rosen finished 17th.
